Our Summer Exhibition is our longest exhibition of the year; it has no particular theme and includes a wide variety of styles from both regular gallery artists as well as providing an opportunity to introduce a few new faces.
I was immediately struck by the work of David Nealon at the annual RSW exhibition. Looking for a piece to award the Fidra Fine Art prize to is always a difficult task but I was immediately drawn to the bold colours and graphic composition of both of David’s pieces…they were unusual and something I kept going back to. As well as awarding the prize I was delighted he agreed to show a few pieces in the Summer Exhibition… looking forward to seeing his work in the gallery.
Donna Briggs’s work I also found at the RSA building, this time as part of the SSA annual exhibition. A collection of vintage cards, cleverly adapted with collage and then mounted on an old wooden school metre ruler and beautifully framed. Amusing, nostalgic and thought provoking with lots to keep coming back to. Again, I am really looking forward to seeing them on the wall in the gallery.
I have admired the charcoal drawing of Tansy Lee Moir for some time now. Powerful portraits of trees that accentuate their timeless strength, twisting, stretching and then morphing into ambiguous, sensual human-like forms.
What better for a summer exhibition than the joyous floral watercolour paintings of Jenny Matthews? A love of watercolour and floral painting which she developed as a student of Elizabeth Blackadder at Edinburgh College of Art, Jenny’s watercolours are bursting with refreshing colour, flooding any room with summer light.
Work is being added to the website as we approach the opening so if you see anything you are interested in, please contact the gallery for further information.
We will open as usual at 11am on Saturday 27 June with refreshments and a chance to meet some of the artists between 2 and 5pm.
I hope you can make it along.
