About the Artist

Arran Ross is a Scottish artist whose output  encompasses Sculpture, Painting and Photography. A previous winner of the Pollock Krasner  and JD Fergusson Awards, he also taught at Edinburgh College of Art. Best known for his “Astronaut” series of works which first took shape in the 1990’s, he has brought a highly individual style and insight to the space genre, ever since.

The central character, in this epic visual narrative, is the Astronaut - a mysterious and enigmatic being, this traveller of time, is not so very far from Caspar David Friedrich’s, “Wanderer” of the C19th and similarly this C21st equivalent, draws us in like a portal, to a world beyond and a world within. It’s a timeless voyage, laced with an ecclectic blend of surrealism, that brings to mind epic bards such as Hieronymous Bosch, Swift, a hint of Dante too, interspersed with more modern masters - Kubrick, Floyd, Bowie ; there is that similarly cathartic sense of passage, a kind of pilgrimage through an inner psychological space, as much as any outer one. Sometimes it's an imagined world in colour and paint, at other times an existential exploration of the physical world using sculptural matter combined with an intrinsic sense of place. It’s a subtle and surreal blend of humour but also one with a many layered pathos - Cute but not without prophetic edge, this otherworldly journey intertwines with our own, with enduring charm, poetic wit and no small amount of Zeitgeist too.
