About the Artist

Clive Ramage - Artist Statement

I have worked as a professional landscape painter and printmaker since 2008. During this time my creative process has constantly evolved, though I continue to work principally with watercolour, acrylics and oil, as well as concentrating on the etching process as a printmaker. Each of these media informs how I work in the others as I progress through a range of subject matter. I am self-taught and work full time between my home-based studio and at both Edinburgh and Dunfermline printmaking workshops.

I am chiefly concerned with capturing the ‘mood’ of the places that inspire me. I try to suffuse each piece with a sense of the atmosphere that took hold of me while I was there; be it climatic or something more ethereal and hard to define. I often go back to the same scene many times and reinterpret previous paintings in another medium or mood.

My inspiration comes from the ever changing colours and moods brought on by variations in seasonal, lighting or weather conditions and my main compositional focus has, up until now, been the city of Edinburgh and the Scottish coastline. However, I am constantly on the lookout for new ideas and creative challenges and spend much of my time travelling and sketching in my camper van in search of both, as well as visiting galleries in the UK and abroad to seek out the art and artists who are closest to my heart.
