About the Artist


William Gallacher was born in New York in 1920 and grew up in Paisley. He left school at 14 to attend Paisley School of Art & Technology. Aged 17 he enrolled in The Glasgow School of Art. In 1941 he joined the Royal Naval Patrol Service serving in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. After demob in 1946 he resumed his studies completing his Diploma of Art in 1947. He then attended Hospitalfield House and completed his post diploma in Mural Painting in 1948. Gallacher joined the staff of the art school in 1948 teaching there and at the Mackintosh School of Architecture till his death in 1978. He is best known for his murals and portraiture.
