"Doig’s painting had popped up on my instagram feed when it entered the National Gallery of Scotland’s collection in 2021.  The figure reminded me of David McKee’s Mr Benn perhaps after he’d been shown through the magic door by the shopkeeper, about to enter into another world for an adventure.  A figure in the countryside, flowers, plants, pattern, fluffy clouds  all seemed like an exciting place to start.  At the edge of town, at the edge of the countryside, drapes and paper flowers, a pink moon, an outdoor performance, a walkdown, the outside becomes the inside of an imagined space where anything is possible.   Similar to Doig’s approach for his painting, it started with the figure, a rather bold boy, before the landscape element developed and a stage-like feel coming in latterly with the introduction of thread and embroidery."
