Artists Statement
My practice has evolved intuitively and organically, using the human head as both vehicle and vessel to explore human nature. I have used the knowledge gained through portraiture as the foundation for less literal work. A strange process of learning, then letting go; the letting go has been surprisingly difficult.
I am increasingly interested in the internal world, which is common to us all, rather than physical appearance, and driven by the curiosity and challenge to try to convey the non-physical through the physical, and my quiet obsession of form and texture. The form and texture is intentionally becoming more pared back, less specific to an individual. Increasingly interested in sculpture comprised of groups and series, possibly exploring the duality within us and the commonality between us.
Exploration repeatedly brings me back to the ordinary, average, mundane; deliberately quiet, static, unassuming. I am also the fact that sculpture is an object which ‘occupies’ space and has the potential to have a presence.
However much of my own thoughts and feelings are channeled into my work, I offer them to the viewer for their own interpretation.
