About the Artist

Biography

Edinburgh-born artist Rosy Barnes paints people and places - whether that's the turbulence and energy of her native city with its roadworks, constant movement and absurd juxtapositions, or recently grappling with rural subjects in the Western Highlands with its infinite textures, and ever-changing weather.

One of the youngest people to attend Leith School of Art under inspirational teachers, Mark and Lottie Cheverton, Rosy attended Glasgow School of Art before studying English and Fine Art at Exeter University. She’s exhibited in group shows at St Margaret's House, Edinburgh, was a Wildcard Winner on Sky Landscape Artist of the Year and was longlisted for the Scottish Portrait Awards, 2021.

She has exhibited regularly at the Union Gallery in Edinburgh, most notably in major show, Innerscape, and was part of two well-received three-artist exhibitions at the Dundas St Gallery: Untraced Stories and Whither.

"I'm interested in so many movements in art and in particular the tension between the idea of "surface paintings" - as espoused by some abstract expressionists - and something that captures a real subject and sense of space. I often find painting a rather agonising process. I just have to hope that something honest and striking will emerge from the flurry of attempts, mistakes, prevarication and struggle. It's usually when I least expect it, that something finally happens, and a picture comes to life.” (Rosy)
