About the Artist

Since studying at The Chelsea School of Art Georgina Bown has worked in many different mediums, including illustration for advertising and print, & architectural design for Architects and Designers. Moving to Leith and qualifying as a welder and fabricator Georgina set up a self-employed business producing large scale public and corporate sculptures. Working with glass and steel Georgina has undertaken commissions across the UK.

Now living and working in North Berwick, Georgina is producing strong, bold lino-cut and Monoprint pictures depicting the fantastic land and seascapes that take her attention every day. There is a strong nautical theme throughout her work.

Georgina has exhibited at the VAS, SSA, RGI and the RSA Exhibitions in Scotland. In London she has Exhibited at The Royal Society of British Artists, Royal society of Marine Artists and ’The Masters of Mono-printing’ at the Bankside Gallery. She was also short-listed for the Royal Academy Summer Show, 2010, 2011 and 2019 which is a fine achievement.

Being based near the East Lothian coast and the proximity to the sea has formed a fascination with sea-going vessels. Submarines have become Georgina's focus partly due to their menacing presence, power and because they are purely designed for a function which intrigues her. Georgina has been fascinated by exposing their strengths but also creating a vulnerability, rendering them helpless/defenceless. A background in metal sculpture facilitates an appreciation of the engineering and construction of these vast, beautiful beasts. Georgina believes there’s an essential link between Printmaking and Sculpture, where the physical use of machinery exposes the senses of touch, noise and smell.

The work she has produced over the last few years is focused on creating Monoprints; this drawing style of Mono-printing she has developed so she can concentrate on mark making as well as pushing and playing with the ink itself to produce one-off printed pictures. Each individual piece a statement in its own right – some intimidating, some fluid and elegant giving thoughts of silent creations coming up from the depths, mysterious, threatening, strong yet gentle.

Supporting visual artwork Georgina teaches sculpture, design and drawing to primary and High School pupils. Georgina also runs monoprinting and drawing workshops for Adults in East Lothian. She specialises in one to one tutoring which she really enjoys.
