About the Artist


Born in Glasgow 1896. Painter in oil and watercolour, wood engraver, etcher & illustrator. Studied at Glasgow School of Art 1918-21 under Greiffenhagen & Forester Wilson. In 1922 embarked on further studies in L’Hote’s studio at La Grande Chaumiere before spending three years as head of the art department at Laurel Bank school in Glasgow. Returned to full time studies 1926, this time as the Slade learning the art and craft of engraving under Thomas Smith and painting under Henry Tonks and Wilson Steer. From 1941 until 1946 worked for the Committee for Education for the Forces and 1946 was elected the first chairman Art Committee of St Andrews which she formed with two other engravers working in the North East of Scotland, the sisters Alison & Winifred MacKenzie becoming their first President 1972. Between 1947 and 1950 a part time member of staff at Dundee College of Art. Elected President of the Art Committee of St Andrews 1972. Illustrated Mathew Arnold’s The Forsaken Merman & The Scholar Gypsy (1927). Exhibited RA(1), RSA(16) & RGI(34) since 1959 from Kinnedar, Helensburgh. Represented in Glasgow Art Gallery.
