About the Artist


Born Scone, Perthshire, died Edinburgh. Landscape painter educated at Perth Academy, Edinburgh Board of Manufacturer’s School & RSA Life School. In 1890 travelled extensively to the continent including Algeria, Holland, Italy and Norway. Fond of the Norfolk Broads, the Fens and the lowlands of Scotland including Fife and East Lothian.

He regularly visited his friend Robert Noble in East Linton becoming associated with the East Linton School of artists where he painted numerous views of East Lothian.

Founder member of the SSA of which he was president in 1908. He was one of the best loved artists of his day and spent most of his time at Bridge of Earn, Perthshire. Exhibited at the RSA throughout his life and also at the RA, RSW, GI and RBA.
RSA(182), RA(3). RSW, GI(189), RHA(6), RBA(1), AAS(1887-1937, & L (13). Represented in paisley Art Gallery, City of Edinburgh Collection, Brodie Castle (NTS).
