About the Artist


George Gilbert was born in Glasgow and studied at the Glasgow School of Art 1957-61 under William Armour & David Donaldson (1957-61) followed by a year of post graduate study (1961-62 (Highly commended). George had a long teaching career in schools in Aberdeenshire, Glasgow & Fife from 1963-88 before leaving in 1989 to paint full time. With his wife Lesley he set up the Courtyard Gallery in Crail in 1993 until 2001.

George exhibits widely in the UK with many solo shows as well as group and mixed exhibitions including the RSW, RSA and the RGI, the Cleveland Drawing Competition, the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition & the RSW summer open. George has won numerous prizes including; Guthrie Portrait prize from Glasgow School of Art (1962), WG Gillies Award from RSW (1992), RSW Council Award (2007) and Scottish Arts Club Award from RSW (2011).
