"Birds in my paintings have become vehicles for my subconscious to play and facilitate self-expression, creating works which could be ornithological studies from a lost world rather than this one. In recent years I have been developing a theme in my work where I explore the private realm of thoughts and feelings of the human condition, including inner turmoil and vulnerability, love and hidden desires, betrayal, motherhood and protectiveness. This has resulted in the alchemy of birds and old master figurative paintings, particularly those with mythological themes.

I responded first to the colour and drama of Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (Guercino)s, beautiful painting of ‘Erminia Finding the Wounded Tancred’ in the National Galleries of Scotland collection. I was initially drawn to the anguished young woman in red, but it was the wounded figure of Tancred that truly resonated with me and found its way into the bird I had chosen to paint. The painting then took on a deeper and more personal meaning for me and I created a still and remote landscape for this troubled creature to reside in and find some peace." Carolynda Macdonald
