About the Artist


Born Glasgow 1958.

Studied at the Mackintosh school of Architecture from 1975-79, Glasgow School of Art 1979-83. Awarded Haldane Trust in 1982 and Cargill Scholarship in 1983. Mark Rothko Memorial Award in 1984. Solo exhibitions in Belgium, Australia, Japan and the UK and internationally important survey exhibitions. I.C.C.F. Best Design Award in New York. Awarded Lord Provost Gold Medal from City of Glasgow in 1999. Began writing for the theatre with commissions from Oran Mor and Glasgow University. First novel shortlisted for the Dundee International Book Prize. Made a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 2005. Made Honorary Fellow of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland in 2012 and made Honorary Member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 2013. Monograph written by Alex Kidson and published by Sansom & Co. 2014.

Major collections include Setagaya Museum in Tokyo, Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Walker Arts Center in Minneapolis, Metropolitan in New York, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Tate Gallery, London and The Museum of Modern Art, New York.
