About the Artist

Born in Edinburgh and died in East Linton. Painter of landscape and genre in oil and occasional watercolour. Studied under his cousin JC Noble at Trustees School and RSA Life Class 1879-84. After studying in Paris under Carolus Duran, he turned to landscape painting, a development confirmed when he moved to East Linton. Robert Noble became the central figure of the band of artists working out of East Linton. Over twenty have been identified, amongst the most notable being Robert Hope, William Miller Frazer and Thomas Bromley Blacklock. In 1891 the Society of Scottish Artists formed and Noble became their first president.

He became ARSA in 1892, RSA 1903, being admitted RA in 1903. He exhibited widely, achieving a bronze medal from the Paris International Exhibition of 1900. Exhibited RSA (134), RA (20), RSW (1), ROI (18), GI (37). Represented in Tate AG, National Galleries of Scotland and City of Edinburgh Collection (2).
