About the Artist

Born Edmonton, London 1883, died Edinburgh 1948. Painter of portraits and genre, also etcher and aquatintist. Studied art at Reading and in Paris at the Academie Julien. Like James McBey, Lumsden taught himself to etch from Lahanne’s Treatise on Etching. Invited to teach at Edinburgh College of Art in 1908. In 1912 he travelled to India with his wife and fellow artist, Mabel Royds where he executed his most highly regarded work. Upon returning to Edinburgh he published Art of Etching in 1925 and illustrated James Bone’s The Perambulator in Edinburgh in 1926. In 1929 he became President of the Society of Artist Printmakers and in 1933 was elected RSA. Arguably, one of Britain's finest etchers.
