Lindsey Lavender
Artist's Statement
Lindsey Lavender’s training as an architect gave her a passion for the built environment: buildings and spaces between. She is inspired by alleyways, structures and derelict places which shape our urban environment as much as by the architecture.
Lindsey’s paintings examine built environments seeking simple, overlooked observations with a fascination for the everyday. Her work has a sense of narrative and an atmosphere of calm which draws viewers in. She explores the rhythm of light and shade, often on the seemingly ordinary.
There is an overriding theme to my work: an idea of optimism and celebration of ordinary life as a foil to a personal journey with depression and darker, overwhelming themes in the world today. That you can see something in your everyday slog which brightens the mood, albeit on a small scale. I want viewers to see something new in the work, to stop and consider the ordinary world around us with a fresh perspective. The works are connected, albeit geographically diverse. We see these elements constantly but barely consider them. They underpin our urban areas and we don't notice. I love to see a piece of undervalued infrastructure warmed by the sun.
