About the Artist

Artist’s Statement

I graduated from Camberwell School of Art where I learnt first to draw and then to paint.

Drawing from observation is still the foundation of my art practice. I work in oil on canvas and watercolour. Mostly I draw in charcoal.

I used to paint in a high key and through time the key has broadened. I now seek out the light even when there is hardly any. Sometimes the challenge is to capture a glimpse of it.

There are a now a number of series in my work: the Snow pictures developed from my fascination with how “white” is never actually “white”. At first there were my two white cats - a white cat sitting in an empty white bath…and then in Scotland, there was snow which I could paint looking out from where I live…

The West Coast brought more challenges, the sea, the shore, the hills and importantly, working outside…
The Auvergne, totally different. A landscape, huge in every direction, and the sense of history, so close to the surface.
Australia, a change of palette, a different vastness, a new beauty and a sense of loss amidst the wonder as climate change begins to affect everything.
