About the Artist


Born Johnstone, Renfrewshire from Italian parents. Painter in oil and watercolour and also printmaker. Trained Glasgow School of Art (graduating 1943) under Hugh Adam Crawford and Henry Y Alison. Other influences include Cezanne, Picasso, Braque, Morandi, Matisse, Rembrandt & JD Fergusson. During the early part of his career he concentrated on still life becoming interested in figures in the late 1950’s. The landscape painting of Tuscany, Lucca and Barga in particular, became a main feature of his work following his marriage in 1944. He travelled to Italy in 1946 and was immediately captivated with the sights, sounds and smells of the area. His lifelong passion for the Italian countryside dates from this visit. Exhibited regularly at RSA, RSW & GI. Represented in Glasgow AG.
